SYSTEMATIC BENEVOLENCE

_______________________________________________

Money for benevolence is collected by the Harris System of Weekly Offerings.

The system: [1.] Seeks to have all give - men, women, and children; [2.] Seeks to have them give upon a deliberately formed plan -- not spasmodically; [3.] Seeks to make giving easy -- by making the payments frequent, and hence small; [4.] Seeks to make giving a religious act -- a laying by in store “upon the first day of the week” -- (1st Cor. 16:23, a coming up to the house of the Lord with a gift -- and accordingly it is assigned a place in the regular order of worship.

Pledges are asked in order to lead as many as possible to form a plan of giving. An account is kept with pledges in order to help those pledging not to let their plan go by default. Envelopes are used as the most convenient way of paying into the account. The Treasurer alone knows the names, and hence the giving is strictly confidential (Matt. 6:2, 4.) The pledges are voluntary and may be modified or discontinued by notifying the Treasurer.

PASTORIAL SUGGESTIONS

___________________________________

The Pastor is ready at all times to respond to any call for ministerial service. In case of Illness or affliction affecting themselves or others, members are expected to notify the Pastor

Page 6---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

promptly by letter or messenger.

Whenever a change of residence occurs, the fact should be made known at once, as much time is often lost in “looking up” people. The new address may be sent to the Clerk, or left in the Pastor’s box in the vestibule.

Special attention is called to the Prayer Meeting. It should be the holiest and happiest hour of the week. Devoted to song, prayer, testimony and practical discussion of the Christian life, it may become a means of grace to the individual, and a source of quickening to the church. “The root of a church’s prosperity is not under the pulpit but in the prayer meeting.” It is a service rather for deepening the spiritual life than for intellectual information. All Christians, old and young, should deem it their privilege to be participants in this meeting. That many may take part, prayers and testimonies should be brief. Avoid, if possible, any engagement that will interfere with attendance. The meetings will commence and close promptly. The people are urged, after the benediction, to linger for conversation.

The social element in church life is of great value. The problem today for the church is to utilize every power of life. The church should take advantage of the social instinct. Christianity is essentially social; it involves not only communion with sulk, but fellowship one with another. A cordial greeting of strangers is a part of church work. To promote mutual acquaintance and the unity of  the congregation as

Page 7---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

a household of faith, social gatherings are of great importance; therefore let all attend them; let personal invitation be given to such as would otherwise  hardly come.

Let the spirit of helpfulness characterize the church membership. As the representatives of Christ in the world, we are called to show his spirit of grace in all that we are and do. Rom. 15:1-8. Opportunities may be found for work in connection with the Sunday School, the Christian Endeavor society, the missionary societies, and the sewing circles.

The secret of power in Christian service is in fellowship with the LIVING CHRIST. We have religious machinery enough He only can supply the needed power. Trustfully joined to Him by the holy spirit, humbly appropriating His most precious truths, obediently living in Him as His members, we shall experience more and more the flowing enthusiasm and indomitable courage implied in the words of Paul. “I can do all things through Christ who strengtheneth me.” Constrained by His love and grace, we shall find it a joy to pray, to give, and labor.

DUTIES OF THE CHURCH AND ITS MEMBERS

___________________________________________

[Extract from the Manuel. - Part of Article 5.]

The church will grant dismission to its members in regular standing, on their application in

Page 8---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

writing, and recommend them to the fellowship of other churches - all such applications to be referred to the standing committee when presented, to be reported upon at the next succeeding meeting of the church. Members removing from the city, or who, from other cause, may cease to worship with this church, shall be required to obtain their dismission within one year there after,  unless circumstances  be such as to render a union with any other church inexpedient; and in such case they shall inform the church why they have not requested a removal of their connection.

[Extract from the Manuel - Article 7.]

It is the duty of the members to attend such stated meetings as are appointed by vote of the church, unless providentially prevented.

Any member having cause of complaint against another, should immediately seek to have it removed in a Christian manner, the direction given in Matt. Xviii:15,16, being his guide, especially incases of personal offence.

Any member wishing to withdraw from this church, and unite with another, should signify his wishes and his reasons, and apply in a proper spirit to be released from his obligations to this church. Any other made will be deemed irregular and censurable; and this church holds itself bound to grant its members, in regular standing, letters of dismission, and recommendations to churches not only of our own, but of any other evangelical denomination, and when such letters shall have been received, and notice of the same been returned to this church, their relationship to

Page 9---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

us shall cease. If, however, any such church shall refuse to receive a letter from this church then, any satisfactory evidence that the person holding the letter has been received to the communion of said  church, shall be deemed sufficient to release the member from his covenant relations with this church. Provided, however, the knowledge that such letter will not be received by the church to whom sent, shall in nowise release the member from requesting and taking the same.
