     Besides the above, they are, doubtless, others who manufacture their own stock.   We give a list only of the principal manufacturers of the article. The number of those who employed workmen, in 1831, was between 60 and 70; and they gave employment to about 3,500 operatives.

      The following schedule shows, in detail, the extent and value of our staple manufacture during the last year.

     There are some materials of minor importance, such as Sewing Cotton, Wax, Paste, &c. &c. which, in the aggregate, would amount to a considerable sum, but which are not estimated.

    A number people are employed in making gentlemen’s boot and shoes, but the business is not carried on so extensively as in some other towns.

     It may be remarked that nearly nine tenths of the females in Lynn are occasionally engaged in the trimming and binding of shoes.

 

     Fisheries.

 

     There are 10 small fishing schooners, manned my about 80 men, which go out into the bay for fish, from November to March; and from 60 to 70 small boats, that are constantly employed in the business.

     There were eight boats and fifty-six men employed at Swampscott in the Bay fishery, for about four months from the middle of November last, and onward.  882,400 lbs. of fish were taking, and sold for $8,500; averaging nearly $150 per man.

     Three whale ships are owned in town, which go into the South Atlantic Ocean.

     High Ways. – It was voted, at the March meeting, that the Selectmen be the Surveyors of the High Ways for the current year; and that $1000 of the annual grant be appropriated to be laid out in repairs thereon.

 

     Taxes. – By a vote of the town, the taxes are to be collected and paid in to the Treasurer as follows:

     $2000 on the 10th day of September; $2000 on the 1st day of November; $2000 on the 1st day of January; $2000 on the 1st day of March, and the remainder on the 1st day of June.  The Collector is authorized to deduct 3 per cent from the taxes of those who pay on or before the 1st of September; and 2 per cent from those paid on or before the 1st of December; and the same is to be paid to the Treasurer within three days of the time, to entitle him to receive the discount from the Treasurer; the Collector being present, and assenting to the foregoing conditions.

 

     Town Expenses. – At the March meeting, it was voted to raise $9,000 to defray the expenses of the town the current year. $3200 are appropriated for the support of Schools.

 

     Taxable Property in Lynn. - $758,177.76.  Tons of Shipping, 739; exclusive of a number of whalers owned here.  No. of Polls, 1639.

 

     Newspapers. – The Weekly Messenger, published on Saturdays, by J. R. Newhall, at $2,00 per annum.  The Lynn Record, published on Wednesdays, by J. B. Tolman, at $2,00 per annum.
