above, they are, doubtless, others who manufacture their own stock. We give a list only of the
principal manufacturers of the article. The number of those who employed
workmen, in 1831, was between 60 and 70; and they gave employment to about
3,500 operatives. The
following schedule shows, in detail, the extent and value of our staple
manufacture during the last year. Schedule of the

which are not estimated. A number people are
employed in making gentlemens boot and shoes, but the business is not
carried on so extensively as in some other towns. It may be
remarked that nearly nine tenths of the females in Lynn are occasionally
engaged in the trimming and binding of shoes. Fisheries. There are 10
small fishing schooners, manned my about 80 men, which go out into the bay
for fish, from November to March; and from 60 to 70 small boats, that are
constantly employed in the business. There were eight
boats and fifty-six men employed at Swampscott in the Bay fishery, for
about four months from the middle of November last, and onward. 882,400 lbs. of fish were taking,
and sold for $8,500; averaging nearly $150 per man. Three whale
ships are owned in town, which go into the South Atlantic
Ocean. Printers. James R. Newhall, John
